The Chiapas Children's Project works alongside public schools in Chiapas, Mexico to encourage underprivileged children to stay in school and to work towards a future beyond the constraints of their every day lives. We aim to enable future leaders of the community from within.
The main focus of our work is La Chozita - an after-school student centre run for children in the hilltop town of San Cristš®bal de Las Casas. The centre was founded in 1999 and has worked with over 40 children during this time.
Children in the program come to La Chozita three times a week for a creative, project-based curriculum focused on maths, Spanish, liberal arts and the students' own rich cultural history. We fund all their expenses and provide their families with a modest stipend to offset the earnings lost while the children focus exclusively on education.
